Truck Licence Ireland: C1, C & Driver CPC Guide
To move from an ordinary car licence into truck driving, you need the correct C-category pathway. If you intend to drive professionally, Driver CPC is an additional qualification and must not be confused with the driving licence itself.Checked against current official Irish information: 9 September 20261. RSA’s professional-driver pathway starts with a full valid category B car/light-van licence, normal residence in Ireland and medical fitness for truck driving.
2. Pass the category C theory test
Pass the relevant truck theory test before applying for the truck learner permit. RSA currently describes the category C theory test as a 100-question multiple-choice test with a pass requirement of at least 74 correct answers.
3. Apply for the correct truck learner permit
Use NDLS for the C1/C learner-permit category that matches the truck you intend to drive. Learner truck drivers must follow the accompaniment and learner restrictions that apply to the category.
4. Take professional lessons and the practical driving test
RSA recommends professional driving lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor. The practical test requires a suitable, roadworthy and insured vehicle and the current test-day documents.
5. Add Driver CPC if you will drive professionally
A full truck driving licence is not the same as Driver CPC. New professional truck drivers generally complete the CPC theory test, case study, practical driving test and walkaround test before applying for the Driver CPC card.
