For most first-time licence categories, the sequence starts with the correct driver theory test, then a learner permit, the required training for that category, a practical driving test and finally the full driving licence.
The exact requirements are not identical for every vehicle. Cars use Essential Driver Training (EDT) for first-time learner drivers, motorcycles use Initial Basic Training (IBT), and professional truck or bus driving can add Driver CPC requirements.

Choose your pathway
TPI separates each pathway so a learner does not mix car rules with motorcycle, truck, bus or SPSV licensing. Start with the category that matches the vehicle or job you want.
- Car / category B
- Motorcycle and moped / AM, A1, A2, A

Licence categories matter
NDLS publishes the legal licence categories and minimum ages. Motorcycle categories include AM, A1, A2 and A; ordinary cars are category B; truck and bus categories sit in the C and D groups. Always check the exact category before applying because vehicle size, passenger capacity and professional use can change the requirement.
