The Rules of the Road are the shared foundation for ordinary and professional driving in Ireland. Before specialising in taxi, motorcycle, truck or bus, learn the shared road framework: road signs and markings, junctions and right of way, speed management, safe following distance, overtaking, parking, roundabouts, motorways, vulnerable road users and safe behaviour.
Learner-driver restrictions matter
Learner permits carry restrictions such as L-plate requirements, accompaniment rules and motorway restrictions. The exact restriction can vary by vehicle category, so TPI should teach the common rule and then link to the category-specific page.
Professional drivers add another layer
Taxi/SPSV, truck and bus drivers must still follow the ordinary Rules of the Road, but their work adds industry or vehicle-specific responsibilities. TPI therefore separates “general road law” from “professional operating rules.”
Use category guides for the details
A motorcycle rider needs motorcycle-specific training and category rules; truck and bus drivers need heavy-vehicle knowledge; SPSV drivers need NTA industry rules. The common road-rules hub should link to each of those rather than duplicating the same content across dozens of pages.
