Driving Licence Categories Ireland: AM to D Guide

AM, A1, A2 and A form a progression from mopeds and lower-powered motorcycles to unrestricted motorcycles. Minimum ages and progressive-access rules apply.
Car category
Category B covers ordinary cars and light vehicles within the legal weight and passenger limits published by NDLS. Trailer combinations can change which category is needed.
Truck categories
C1 and C cover heavier goods vehicles. The exact maximum authorised mass and trailer combination determine the licence needed. Professional work can also trigger Driver CPC.
Bus and minibus categories
D1 and D cover passenger vehicles above the ordinary category B passenger limit. Professional passenger work can also require Driver CPC and, separately, operator or vehicle licensing.
