School Bus Driver Ireland: Licence, CPC & Vetting Guide
There is no single “school bus licence” that replaces the ordinary bus/minibus driving rules. The driver must hold the licence category that matches the vehicle. D1 and D are different passenger-vehicle categories, so the vehicle capacity and specification determine which licence is required.
Professional bus driving can require Driver CPC
Where the school transport work is professional bus driving and no exemption applies, Driver CPC is part of the professional-driver qualification. This sits alongside the D-category licence rather than replacing it.
School Transport Scheme contracts add safeguarding and vetting controls
The Department of Education states that Bus Éireann operates the School Transport Scheme. Government material on school transport licensing says nominated drivers and vehicles contracted to the scheme are subject to checks, including driver vetting through Bus Éireann and the Garda National Vetting Bureau.
Vehicle and operator rules are separate from the driver licence
A school-transport vehicle may also be subject to passenger-service vehicle licensing, roadworthiness, insurance and operator requirements. Some special school-transport arrangements use an Article 60 licensing process. These are vehicle/operator matters and should be checked for the exact contract and vehicle.
Families applying for school transport follow a different process
